We live in a world where information on just about anything is a mere click (or tap!) away, but can we ever trust everything we see on the internet? In an age where many will outright manipulate information, pictures and videos it can be hard to tell what is really true and what isn’t.
The best plan is to always be skeptical of anything and try and do your own research. Chances are you will find the truth at some point, or at least learn why things work the way they do.
There are also things we see everyday that we aren’t skeptical enough of, as things often aren’t as they seem.
So sit back, relax and get ready for some major truth bombs. These are 12 things that will absolutely blow your mind.
1. Goldfish Memory
We’ve all been told that a goldfish has a memory span of about 3 seconds and that’s why they can swim in a small bowl without going crazy. Well, several studies have shown that this isn’t really the case. These fish can retain associative memories for up to 6 days. A huge leap away from the 3 second myth!
2. Chupa Chups
Chances are you’ve heard of this company and absolutely adore their lollipops. One thing that a lot of seem to take as fast is that Chupa Chups is an American company, built on the backs of hardworking Americans, but this isn’t actually the case. The company was created by Enric Bernat in Barcelona, Spain. In fact, the first logo ever created for the lollipop was designed by none other than Salvador Dali!
3. Owl Legs Aren’t As Short As You Think
When you think of an owl, you probably think of a long body and short stubby little legs. It makes sense because why do they need legs when they can just fly around everywhere. Hell, they can turn their heads almost 300 degrees, so they hardly need to use their legs at all! But underneath all those fluffy feathers is a actually an impressively long set of legs. Their bodies are a lot smaller than we imagined!
4. Flying Moths
If you see a moth flying around in your room or near your closet your gut reaction is to freak out. Moths will eat your clothing and you will have to throw away so much of your favorite clothing. Well, this isn’t actually true. The adult moths do not eat through clothing, only their offspring does. After the eggs hatch, the tiny moth babies will feast on your clothing as they grow. So you certainly don’t want an adult moth living in your closet, they aren’t going to destroy your entire wardrobe overnight.
5. Paving Blocks
When you’re walking down a sidewalk, made up of many bricks and blocks it’s hard not to appreciate the hard work that went into crafting it. Sure it’s no Picasso, but it’s really beautiful and required a lot of hard, back breaking work… right? Well as you can see down below it doesn’t require many individual blocks to be placed to create this. Instead this clever rig gives off the perfect illusion of that work without requiring an entire team. My heart is broken.
6. Potato Chips Aren’t Just Potatoes
If you’ve ever tried to make your very own potato chips at home, this may not come as a huge surprise to you. If you do make them at home you will find that they are ever so slightly different. This is because commercially sold chips use a blend of starch, flour, and water to help improve and prolong the crunchy texture of potato chips.
7. Diamonds Aren’t Inherently Valuable
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but it’s not because of their rarity. It turns out that there is a company called De Beers that has a global monopoly over all diamonds. They control all the diamond mines in the world and have come up with a clever, yet unethical plan to make diamonds more valuable. They simply set the price much higher and control how many diamonds are in circulation. Meaning that they can hold their high price all the time.
8. Hello… Kitty?
We all know this cartoon feline, but she may not actually be a cat as we’ve been told. I mean does she really fit the profile of what a cat is? We never see her walking on all four legs, she acts more like a human girl than a cat. She even owns a pet cat herself. Something certainly doesn’t add up. Perhaps she’s more like a Pokemon where she’s an original design based off of a cat rather than a cat herself. She’s still very cute, though.
9. Our Globe Isn’t Perfectly Circular
Drawing the earth always seems really easy because it’s a perfect circle. Unlike having to draw your state or such, you can just draw a circle, it’s fantastic. However the earth isn’t actually as round as we thought. If you level the sea surface you will see that the earth looks more like a potato than a circle. The model of earth is called a geoid.
10. Towels In Stores
If you’ve ever gone into a Bed Bath and Beyond you may have seen the gigantic wall of towels, all perfectly stacked and beautiful. If you’re a stickler for organization like myself, you’ll certainly appreciate the hard work that went into create such a masterpiece and maintaining it. Sadly though, that fantasy will only be in our minds as you see above. In a way it’s really clever as stops shoplifters but it makes it easier for them to keep the towels within reach. Still, I’ll miss the idea of them stacking that many towels.
11. Difference Between Coke Cans and Bottles
It isn’t just your imagination! If you’ve noticed, like many Americans have, that Coke just seems to taste different when drank out of a can you will be glad to know that is in fact quite true. Studies have shown that the aluminum cans will absorb part of the taste (and smell!) of your Coke, meaning that it tastes slightly differently. Don’t worry drinking those cans is still healthy, but it won’t taste as good as if you drank it out of a bottle!
12. There Is, In Fact, Gravity In Space
It may only be a very small amount, but it is certainly noticeable for those up in space. Whether the astronauts are out in space, inside their vessel or floating around in the International Space Station, they are all slowly, but surely, falling closer to earth. No matter how far away we get, Mother Earth will always be there pulling us back.
