The most simple and familiar of household chores is often a challenge for the elderly. It requires significant effort and physical exertion from them to carry out basic activities an active youth will have no problem with. It is usually a struggle for any able-bodied human to watch any elderly strain themselves to perform a task they would do in no time. Cleaning out-of-reach windows, bending to clean the floor or vacuum, washing or folding clothes, mowing the lawn, picking and disposing of trash, climbing steps and all other sorts of activities typically turn out to be near impossible for them.
This was the case for Gerry Suttle, a septuagenarian living in Waco, Texas. The 75 years old woman has had difficulties in doing the everyday tasks in her home, but luckily for Gerry, she has four boys living in her hometown that was bent on helping!
Despite her old age, Gerry was still able to manage the chores inside her home, but she owns a lot across the street from her home which she was impossible for her to think of mowing. As a result, the grass grew in her lot to a staggering 18 to 20 inches over months, drawing the attention of neighbors and complaints from the local community.
As it turned out, the untended growth of the grass became a big deal in her town which got her a court summons. Unfortunately for her, the court summons was lost ‘in transit’ and never got to Gerry. Failing to get to the court on the appointed day resulted in the issuing of an arrest warrant for her, all for not mowing her lawn.
At this point, one of the local families heard of Granny Gerry’s predicament; the Reynolds family became involved to save the day.
Four of the Reynolds boys came to Gerry’s rescue in the hot summer sun with their lawn mowers to clear the empty piece of land. The young Reynolds worked the whole day to mow the overgrown lawn to a level that complies with the local rules of the city.
The oldest of the boys, Blaine Reynolds, told reporters investigating the story that they decided to mow Gerry’s lawn of their volition and it was the only thing to do for her without any ifs, or buts about it.
He said, “We have not seen her yet, but we offered to help as she needs some help mowing her lawn. It’s the least we could do for her.”
Gerry was glad for the help from the Reynolds and, she thought she had been cleared of all charges since the boys made the lawn compliant with the rules.
At first, Gerry was told the charges against her could be dropped, but she received another court summons which made her aggravated. Gerry described the new court order as ‘the final straw’ when interviewed.
She said, “It is heartrending for me to know that kids I knew nothing about came out to spend two hours in the hot sun to mow a lawn we thought the city only wanted mowed and then they turned around to say ‘no.’”
Even though the legal issues facing Gerry now could not be cleared by lawn mowing once and for all, the Reynolds brothers still insisted on helping the elderly woman in whatever way they can.
Blaine said, “We’d all do it for her the second time, or the third until she is cleared of all wrongdoing and we keep her from going to court.”
One could only hope that having these boys on her side will help her overcome her woes.
