Over the years pregnant women have often been advised to always sing and speak to their unborn babies. Despite the fact that they cannot utter a word back they surely can hear every single word the mother does say and these always reflect in their behavior and attitude when they grow up.

The tongue is such a powerful weapon, even the God warns us in His Word that the tongue has incredible power. We can use our tongue to bring blessings and life or curses and death. The words we spill out of our mouths to anyone especially little children stick like glue- they are irreversible and greatly impact people for a lifetime, therefore positive, uplifting and encouraging words are always best to be said to the children as these do influence what they pick interest in and what they will define as their passion in the nearest future.

Words are extremely powerful tools, they can make or break someone. The words spoken to children have such an enormous effect on their little developing brains.

Children often times imitate what is around them, what they hear and they have such sharp memories- they can hardly forget a thing they see or hear. The way one speaks to a child greatly affects who they become in future. Saying positive, building and uplifting words to children turns them into responsible and successful adults later in life while talking down on them, harshly criticizing and discouraging them negatively impacts their self-esteem, destroys their precious sense of being and automatically dwindles their confidence levels.

As a parent, relative, guardian or caretaker, it’s your duty to set the children under your care up for success. This can be achieved by creating a good relationship with them, recognizing their positive behavior and encouraging them to pursue their dreams and constantly reminding them of what they are able to achieve in life.

But if children aren’t taught that the possibilities in their lives are endless and that they can be or do anything they aspire to do.

Thankfully, one young woman didn’t have to find out the latter. She had a role model who encouraged her to grow up and follow her dreams.

It was none other than her 12-year-old babysitter named Raquel who is now a poet. Raquel didn’t spend long hours with her or lecture her with talks filled with wisdom, and she didn’t serve as the girl’s mentor.

Raquel’s work was to look after the baby and ensure she was not lacking while her parents were away according to her job description. All she did was encourage the little girl she baby sat and always loved the little things she laid her hands on. This was followed by various words of encouragement. This young girl later grew up into a young woman that has lived to fulfill all that the nanny ever in saw her. She’s now pursuing her dreams as an artist, she was accepted into three major art schools thanks to her babysitter’s words of encouragement and confidence.

Raquel posted on her blog, Red Blood, Black Ink that features her poetry:

“When I was 12 I babysat this little girl for a few years and she would always come up to me and show me her work for the week and to this I would always follow with tons of funny nice sayings that she seemingly wanted to always want to hear as I looked down at her art pieces this would always leave her giggling and amused though somewhat encouraged about what I had to say about the next art piece and she would always double check with me on whether I liked the pieces before I tucked her into her bed for her night sleep.

That little girl went onto to pursue her dreams and she recently wrote me a letter in which inside was a picture of her when young and on it, she had scribbled ‘Thank you to somebody that saw the best in me.’ This made me realize that sometimes it does not take the very big gestures to cause a change in someone’s life but it’s those little things that we do and say that does bring about a change in someone else’s life.”

What an amazing story!

It just goes to show you how powerful words can be. So, the next time you utter some words in front of a child, think of how Raquel’s words had the power to change that little girl’s life as you could be the next Raquel to make a change. No matter what position you could hold in that child’s life you are so much worth responsible for that child’s bring up and wellbeing and what becomes of them after they grow up.
