The Bermuda Triangle, also commonly known as the “devil’s triangle” is found in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. This region has so many conspiracy theories written about it by numerous authors who claim that they know exactly why multiple different planes have mysteriously gone missing and start spouting nonsense about aliens.
While many theorists believe that the 700,000km stretch of water has some sort of supernatural power, one scientist strongly believes he has found the reason behind all of the madness and his conclusion is convincing, but also… a bit disappointing.
But how did the Bermuda Triangle got its legendary status?
The Bermuda Triangle is one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the whole wide world, with vessels frequently crossing through it to get to multiple different ports in the Caribbean Island, America, and Europe. Cruise ships normally sail through the Bermuda Triangle and aircraft routinely fly over it as well. The mystery surrounding the area started to grow in the 20th century after different planes and ships went missing over a period of a couple of decades.
In 1918, a large carrier ship which was designed to deliver fuel to the American fleet in WWI disappeared in the Triangle. The USS Cyclops set sail with 309 on board and was loaded up with heavy cargo, but it failed to arrive in Baltimore after leaving Barbados.
Once it was registered as missing, multiple different search teams were sent out to retrace its route, but in vain, no single remains were ever found. Then, in 1941, two of the Cyclops’ sister ships also disappeared along with the same route.
So, what happened to them? Dr. Kruszelnicki believes he has the answers.
The legend of the Bermuda Triangle then further deepened in 1945, when five planes went missing during flight. On December 5, 1945, Flight 19 – which featured five TBM Avenger Torpedo Bombers – took off from Florida for a training mission and never returned. There were 14 crew members onboard the mission, but 27 men vanished that night after a seaplane with 13 men onboard went looking for the aircraft once it disappeared, but they also never returned.
Surprisingly, despite a huge land and sea search, no bodies or wreckages have ever been found from that night.
So, what exactly led to all this death and mystery? Well, one scientist claims that he knows why. Dr. Kruszelnicki says that there is nothing like a mystery to be solved when it comes to the Bermuda Triangle, as all the incidents were most likely caused by human error.
Well, sorry if you thought the mystery surrounding the Bermuda Triangle was some kind of supernatural power.
Speaking about how he uncovered this disheartening news, Dr. Kruszelnicki said:
“According to Lloyds of London and the US coast guard, the number of planes that go missing in the Bermuda Triangle is the same as anywhere in the world on a percentage basis. It is close to the equator, near a wealthy part of the world, America, therefore you have a lot of traffic.”
And speaking specifically about the incident involving Flight 19, Kruszelnicki said that Lieutenant Charles Taylor was most likely to blame for the incident.
“They vanish without a trace then another plane sent out to look for them vanishes. [So some people claimed] it must have been aliens”, he said.
“(But) there was one experienced guy, the rest were inexperienced.
“It wasn’t fine weather, there were 15m waves.”
Kruszelnicki continued, saying:
“If you read the radio transcripts some of the junior pilots are saying, ‘Why don’t we fly to the west?’, and the pilot says, ‘Why don’t we fly to the east?’ (Lt. Taylor) arrived with a hangover, flew off without a watch, and had a history of getting lost and ditching his plane twice before.
The plane that went to rescue them went missing was seen to blow up. “It didn’t vanish without a trace.”
So there we have it, the reason all those planes go missing is that of us humans. Although it sounds a bit stupid because we’re talking about quite a few people dying here, I really wanted it to be something cooler than that. But, if you go looking for answers, you’re eventually going to end up finding some pretty foolish answers – Dr. Kruszelnicki is just bringing everybody back down to Earth.
Still, though, I’m sure the conspiracy theorists will have some sort of way of proving that Dr. Kruszelnicki is incorrect.
