Have you ever imagined yourself earning from just lying in bed? This sounds ridiculous! Right? But NASA is willing to offer you an enormous amount of money for it. Have you dreamt yourself earning USD 100,000 in just two months? If you have, then this may be a dream come true. This article aids you in how your dream could be made a reality. We trust you will be fascinated as the story unfolds.
Hanging out in bed whole day each day and actually still get a paycheck for it at the end of the month can only go as far as a mere a fantasy for the majority of us.
However, to some fortunate individuals, what seems to be a dream is about to turn out into a reality. Don’t you believe me? Please go ahead and explore this amazing reality as we unfold the story for you.
As part of their latest experiments “Bed Rest Studies”, NASA is giving out an awkward amount of money to simply chill out in bed whole day.
All those interested to take part in the experiment will be required to go 60 days concurrently lying in bed. This sums up to over 8 weeks chilling in bed, which implies spending close to 2 months without having to go work.
All this would imply spending a full 2 months-period without having to report to your boss, or perhaps of being kind to customers on the phone, or sitting at a desk and waiting for the clock to hit five, or sitting and waiting in peak hour traffic all frustrated and better still, not having to set an alarm clock in the morning to the majority of us, this simply sounds like merely a dream job and does not really go beyond that. In other words, better said than done.
But sincerely how long do you think you could stay lying in bed without going crazy?
To some of us, we could say that there is no limit to the number of days we could go lay in bed without going insane. And even though there could be, when the going gets tough, the participants of the “Bed Rest Studies” have got the karma and motivation pushing them with a nice big reward at the back of their minds which will comprise of a nice big cheque with their name written on.
Actually still, whenever it gets tedious while lying in bed, these participants will only have to think back to their usual day jobs and mull over of what would be better, being in bed or in their offices?
Majority of us could easily agree on the answer. Right?
On that note, this is certainly one job that I would apply for when given the opportunity. We can, therefore, agree unanimously that NASA will be receiving several applications.
However, as there is always a price for something, candidates will need to pass rigorous physical and psychological tests in order to ensure that they resemble, according to the application form, “the [NASA] astronaut population.”
That may surely rule most of them out. Don’t you have anything in place to keep you from getting bored? Yes, surely there is. A good book to read is within your vicinity to occupy your time with. Alternatively, if you’re not into that, then remember you’ve always got your TV, video games, Netflix, and of course, your phone, which you’re able to use as anytime you feel like. The key is to remain to lie down of course.
So now you are perhaps mulling over what on earth is the point in this experiment?
Well, NASA would like to investigate and study how the body would react to extended periods of rest, aimed at helping the NASA scientists with some idea about bone and muscle atrophy for astronauts who are going on extended periods of space travel. So, once they know all about this, they will be able to find ways to keep astronauts healthier. According to NASA, the objectives of the experiment are as follows;
According to NASA, the objectives of the experiment are as follows;
1. To Understand how one’s changing physiology in space may affect the process of certain missions.
2. To Understand the impact of one’s physiological state on their ability to perform in particular tasks.
3. To Prepare countermeasures to combat any impairment that these physiological conditions may impose.
Nevertheless, there is something unique. You will not be laid in your own bed, but a special bed, which will be inclined head down at a six-degree angle. This sounds absurd. Here is the reason – because tilting the bed has got an effect on the cardiovascular system in ways similar to those experienced in space.
As you think of considering and getting fully committed to the study, you should be aware that during the 60 days in bed, you will not have to leave to do anything. And yes, that means you won’t be able to leave your bed to go to the toilet, or for a shower, or to get food when you want.
Are we still considering the application? Perhaps yes!
In addition to the severe conditions, these conditions will likely cause you to experience dizziness as the tilted bed will reduce your blood pressure and cause a slow decrease in blood volume. In addition, as the days and weeks pass, your muscles will begin to deteriorate up your back and in the bottom half of your body, with bone density also decreasing and your immune defenses likely to lower.
Nonetheless, this is not the first time NASA has done an experiment of this kind. Back in 2014, NASA paid a group of human guinea-pigs $18,000 to lie down for 70 days while researchers analyzed them. One brave gentleman Andrew Iwanicki was just one of the candidates to take part in the experiment and he extensively wrote about his experiences in an article for VICE, where he documented the headaches, bedpans, boredom, severe backache, and how he was “wishing eternal tarnation upon all of NASA” at one point during those 70 days.
He went on to add, “I experienced some serious headaches because the blood pressure increased in my head. My spine went through some serious pain. Staying horizontal is difficult. I’ve been told that it is difficult for the spine to deal with all the pressure of the organs lying on the spine throughout the day.”
If that is not bad enough, Iwanicki also had to follow a strict sleeping schedule.
He explained:
“I was on a regimented sleep schedule. Lights out at 10 p.m., lights on at 6 a.m. No napping allowed during the day, which is one of the cruelest jokes about being stuck in bed all day, not being able to nap.”
Right now you should be thinking that this experiment is not even close to what it is broke down. If the simple requirement of not being allowed to nap during the day is not enough to put you off, then I do not know what is.
In describing more about the moment of his bed study experience, Iwanicki said “As soon as the bed was tilted to the vertical position, my legs felt heavier than ever before. My heart started to beat at 150 BPMs. My skin became itchy; I was covered in sweat. Blood rushed into my legs, expanding the veins that had become increasingly elastic throughout the past several months of bed rest”.
And more still, if you’re considering to take part, is the fact that the experiment will consist of two categories. One will be the Exercising category and the other will be the Non-exercising group.
The exercising group, are able to exercise using special tools that help them stay active while still lying down. While non-exercising groups must stay completely at rest the entire time.
Take time to ponder over about which group you’d rather be in!
A variety of tests will be completed during the entirety of the study such as the bone, muscle and heart tests. The other tests that will be completed will be of the circulatory and nervous system as well as tests on your nutritional condition, and the body’s capacity to fight off infections.
And yes, that could be a tick for you as that means you won’t simply be left to relax alone in your room for the full 60 days. Instead, you’ll be prodded and poked by a host of scientist on a regular basis. This doesn’t sound like the relaxing experience you were looking for after all.
So what do you think? Could you meet the required conditions and participate in the experiment? Do you think you could handle it?
